How My Viral Door Wedge Reel Reached 3.6 Million Views

This past summer, something very unexpected happened.

A short Instagram video I posted - a one take clip taken on the fly by my son - took on a life of its own. Within days, the views climbed into the hundreds of thousands. Then the millions. Today, that video has been watched over 3.6 million times! 

My Instagram followers have grown from less than 500 to over 6,000 in 5 months.

The product? A humble door wedge.

Where the idea came from

It started as a small idea, a solution to a problem I needed to solve for myself.

If the window was open, our bedroom door would rattle in the frame all night. Given that we have a tiny bedroom, the window always needs to be open. For years, we made do with an old sock to prevent it slamming into the frame before I decided I needed to up my game and find a more aesthetically pleasing solution... especially as I sell homeware for a living. 

For once, the product design didn't take long at all. Taking inspiration from slide under double sided draught excluders, I realised a shortened version of this design would do the job. 

The best bit

Positive feedback in the form of comments started rolling in. "I've been desperately looking for one of these", "What a fab idea, love it", "These are genius", "What an elegant design" to quote a few!

I was blown away by the response.

Users from round the world were clicking through to my website, then Etsy shop. I've sold hundreds and have largely 5 star product reviews from customers who are thrilled this little product has helped solve an annoying problem.

I've since expanded the fabric options to increase appeal.
